Birthday Fun

Yaks' birthday started with a little trip to our local grocery store for some "banoons", because really, what is a birthday without balloons? I let each one choose their favorite and a nice lady (who happens to be from our ward) filled them up for us. Yaks chose Toy Story and Boo chose Curious George.

We wrapped a few presents.  This was my favorite wrapping job.  Horses need to breathe, right?

We spent some serious time decorating for our "party".  These photos are actually from decorating for Josh's birthday, but you'll get the idea.  The kids utilized their mad skills with tying knots to assemble a web of balloons going up the stairs. They were so proud of it.

When you are in the balloon business, it takes GREAT concentration.

Dad came home early and spent several hours creating battle scenes for their new "soldier" set.  The kids were in heaven.  There are no less than 5,000 pieces to this toy!

Can I brag for just a minute? Guys, I decorated this cake all by myself! I let the kids look at this cake decorating website and this was the one Yaks chose. I used crushed oreos for the road (note it's in the shape of the number three), and used yellow Starburst for the road lines (thanks for the idea, Angie). I let Yaks choose two of his favorite cars to place on the cake, and viola! I'm not very creative or skilled in decorating, so this was really something for me.

Boo was suffering all day from Birthday envy. Any of your kids get this? She wants the attention, the presents, the You Are Special Today red plate, etc. Realizing they are close in age and still young, I tried to get her a few little presents to open, her own balloon, etc, but she still struggled to just be happy for her brother on his special day. It was embarrassing. We've gotta work on that.  Any parenting tips on how to handle that one would be appreciated.

This picture captures it: Our traditonal "I'm ____ today picture" and Boo started crying that she wanted to hold the paper and get her picture taken too. Okie doke!

Yaks didn't let it spoil his day, though.  What a champ!  Happy Birthday, buddy!

Okay, so you are going to have to go into the cake decorating business! I love it! What a fun birthday.

I love the cake too!!! It looks great! I will definitely keep that in mind for my boys birthday! They would love it. Maddie just had her birthday and the boys had some hard times too. Luckily she let them help open some presents and we even relit a birthday cake candle so Ryan could blow it out. But I would love advice on how others handle that as well!

The cake is wonderful! I may have to 'borrow' that idea for Miles' upcoming day. He is so cute!

What a fun birthday! I love the note you wrote for Yaks and love how you can write exactly how he talks! Lovely cake. They are my arch nemesis for birthdays. I hate hate hate to decorate them! So when they turn 8 they get to go pick out their own and we go to 3 different stores to pick the best one.

I'm not sure how to handle birthday envy. my kids are 4 years apart and it has pretty much been OK. Not perfect, but OK. We let Carter pick out an old toy to wrap up for Ethan's first birthday and that was good. And my kids love to help each other unwrap presents together. Sometimes a special one on one moment with the non birthday child helps just to reaffirm how special they are and remind them of something cute they did on the day the new sibling was born

Cute cake. Tori plans her cake and party for months prior to her birthday and that spilled over into Michael's birthday. She was not jealous because she pretty much planned his day, but there is a three year age difference. I love my kids birthdays--they are my favorite holiday.

Amy, Such a cute blog for Ben's Birthday! I love your tribute to Ben! That is such a treasure. I especially love Jane's look on that picture of "I'm 3 today". I think that picture tells it all! I love it! Love Nana

Seems I haven't been doing well on blog reading this week. I've missed a whole bunch of posts. I love the cake. Starbursts can seriously be used in so many ways! The dog and and kibbles is very cute.
