Cross Your Fingers, Cross Your Toes?

I don't normally pay much attention to my toes. Josh is a meticulous pedicurist (is that a word?) and will spend time pruning his nails, clipping his cuticles and making his feet happy souls. I, on the other hand have callouses, neglected nails and dry skin. Josh will sometimes look at my feet a little disgustedly, and then kindly offer to give me a pedicure, which I always flatly refuse, mostly because I don't like having my feet touched. It's a newly discovered peeve.

Pay no attention to the veins on my feet. I've got them on my hands, too.
Do you see the #3 and #4 toe? They're literally, too close for comfort!
Oh, this pic was taken on my camera phone! Great idea, L-Train!

Well, a few weeks ago I noticed that my third and fourth toe on my left foot seemed to be crowding eachother. I looked down at my bare feet and sure enough, my toes are crossed! This wouldn't be a huge deal, but it feels like someone is constantly touching my feet. Mmmllllllahhhh! I haven't broken my toes, so the only thing I can think of is because I've gone around either barefoot or in cheap flip-flops all summer!? Would that cause toe-crossing? Does this mean that I'll have extra luck because my toes are now always crossed? I actually took one of those triangular-shaped makeup sponges and wedged it between my toes last night to get some relief from the touchy reflex. I don't know friends. Weird stuff. Is this what a podiatrist does? "Hi, Doc. My toes are crossing and it really bugs. Can you fix them?" Do you think he'll break my toes to "fix" the problem?

Please advise.
Amy

Next time you are at walmart or target, check out the section with all of the nail stuff. You should be able to find a toe separator (sp?), it's the foamy thing that they put between your toes when they do manicures. It will help soothe your toes and put them back in place. If you can't find them there, try a nail place. It should cost more than a couple bucks.

Part of me wishes I could blame this on your unwillingness to let your husband take care of your feet, but I don't think that's the cause. I think you should get your husband to watch the kids so that you can go see a foot Dr. I saw this online: http://www.footphysicians.com/footankleinfo/crossover.htm. Be grateful your feet don't look like that illustration.

I also ran across this: http://www.surgeryencyclopedia.com/Fi-La/Hammer-Claw-and-Mallet-Toe-Surgery.html

Thanks for that tip, L-train. Josh, thanks for the offer. Let's see where the foam splint and some decent shoes get me, and then we'll talk. Those photos and descriptions scare me!

My big toes point in as a result of no arch across the metatarsal region of my foot. Since I don't have the proper foot structure, all the pressure goes on my big toes. Some docs have suggested surgery, but there's no guarantee that will make things better; sometimes it backfires and makes things worse.

I'd see an orthopedic before you see a podiatrist. In my experience, orthopedics are quick to do orthotics and physical therapy while podiatrists are quick to operate. Remember all those YEARS of terrible leg and foot pain I had? A good pair of orthotics has all but cured that.

You may not be feeling any pain there yet, but if you don't deal with this now, it may come down the road. I remember my doc saying that having all that pressure on one or two toes (instead of being properly distributed) ends up causing nerve damage long term.

Your idea to get a new pair of shoes is great, too. I find that if I get a new pair of running shoes every 12 months, my feet/legs stay in great shape. Otherwise I start to have aches and pains.

Good luck, friend! I hope it's something minor. I wouldn't wish my experiences on anyone!!

Hmmm, Ya got me on that one. Ya been wearing any pointy toe high heels lately? I think it just must be a luck thing. Only a blessed few have toes that slowly, over span of their life, migrate into the crossed position. If it hurts I would suggest a Dr. Maybe you need a toe splint.
