Nap Wars

I know many of you have children who have "outgrown" naps ("Nnooooooo"). Boo goes in phases where I think she's done with the naps for good, but then surprises me by napping for two hours. She awakens a happy, helpful, calm and content child. I feel like crying, "You've returned to me! Oh, I've missed you so!"

I know Cousin Sarah uses a large sand timer for her daughter, which works well for the "quiet time" in her room. L-train has struggled with how to give her son enough quiet time, but to give him some signal for when he can come out. A beeping alarm clock or egg timer seems to defeat the purpose of "quiet time"when it rings your sleeping child awake, right?

I found something pretty awesome on a site called ThinkGeek. It's called Teach Me Time! Clock. Sure, it's educational and all that, but it glows green when it's okay for the child to come OUT of their rooms! "When the light turns green, you can come out!" Brilliant.

  • Multi-function alarm clock for kids
    • Teaches children to tell time with talking, interactive game
    • Announces time on demand by pressing right "toe" button
    • "Ok to Wake" Dual Color Nightlight Timer (when the clock turns green, the kids are allowed to get out of bed)
    • Analog and digital time displays (use either or both)
    • Full function alarm clock with snooze
  • Kid friendly shape, parent friendly design
  • Concealed "parental control" panel for setting all options
  • Voice volume and LCD brightness are adjustable
  • Interchangeable LCD bezels (blue, pink, and yellow)
  • Certified free of lead paint
  • Power: AC adapter (included) and 2 AAA battery backup (also included)
  • Dimensions: 5.0" x 4.1" x 5.3"

This is such a great idea! I think we need a few around here. I love the write up on the ThinkGeek website. Too funny "we can't just call the exterminators" ha.

What a great idea! We do the "You can't come out 'til the clock says 7" thing, but that doesn't help much when Goose goes in for quiet time. She hasn't quite grasped the concept of minutes yet, and it's rare that the timing works out well enough that I can say she can come out after a certain given hour. I wish we hadn't just spent money on a new alarm clock for her room. I'd totally spring for it!

That is GREAT! Are you going to get one? Maybe the neon light will deter closet monsters!
