Whenever I Think About Pioneers

We Utahans are fortunate to have two special holidays in July. Pioneer Day is coming up on Thursday, in which we celebrate the entry of Brigham Young and the first group of Pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Growing up, this was never much cause for celebration. We didn't have the day off, we didn't live anywhere near Utah, and our fireworks were all...exploded. Here in UT, the firework tents are still up, picnic food is still "on sell", and everyone's gearing up for more parades and celebrations.

I do remember that our parents would have a special Family Home Evening around Pioneer Day to celebrate our pioneer ancestors and share stories about them. Since the kids are a bit young to sit still and listen to stories about the Pioneers, I think we'll just put this together, go for a ride on this "covered wagon", and sing this.

I thought this was a cute idea, too. Too many stories for my kids, but it could be adapted.

Then I think we'll try to make some Salt Water Taffy for a treat. This might be a total disaster.

You are the perfect Pioneer Day celebrating Mom. We are going to my sister's pig roast.

Oooooh, I love pig roasts. Can I crash the party? How did that tradition begin w/ your sister, anyway? Have you blogged about that before?

What great ideas. I think we might copy some!

Great ideas! I need to get planning a Pioneer Day FHE. I honestly don't always remember it now that I don't live in the "pioneer land". Thanks for the reminder and the ideas.
