Be Consistent

We had our Stake Conference yesterday, which was a broadcast. It was wonderful and the speakers' topics were on Strengthening the Family. Elder Lund, Sister Lant, Elder Bednar and President Eyring spoke. Elder Bednar spoke about Family Home Evenings that he and Sister Bednar held for their boys growing up. I was expecting him to recount the dozens of successful FHE's, the attentive listeners and the tender testimonies shared in a quiet setting. He said (and I'm paraphrasing) that common phrases were: "He's looking at me. He's breathing my air! He's on my side of the line. Stop touching me!" He said he and Sister Bednar were often exasperated and frustrated with the results of many of their Home Evenings together. He said that if his sons were here today and were asked about the FHE's held in their youth, they wouldn't be able to recount any particular lesson or activity or prayer, but they would most likely say, "We were consistent."

I was so amazed and relieved that things didn't always go perfectly smooth for Apostles and their families. I assumed they all turned out calm, perfect children who went on to raise more calm and perfect children. It was so refreshing and comforting to know that kids are kids, no matter who the parents are, but that shouldn't stop us from doing our best!

Great talks all. I did have a bit of a difficult time hanging on.. I did.. but I don't think the Stake had actually planned on everyone coming and THEY DID! I felt like I was on a crammed Delta flight to NYC.. there was no air left in the room. I thought that I might not make it for 2 hours.. but I'm here today.. so I guess I made it. When Elder Eyring started talking about those people who sat for 2 hours in a driving rain to see Pres. Hinckley.. I started feeling a little like wimp. But wow! They had all the seats set up in every room of the church and it was packed tight and I didn't see an empty seat anywhere.

Oh, I feel bad Loveboxes! We had three empty seats next to us. It was a bit stuffy towards the end, and it was nice to walk home in the fresh air.

I totally agree. Consistenty is the key to sucess with FHE. It is the way we show our children that we are practicing what we preach.

I loved that talk by Elder Bednar. That part about "she's breathing my air" resonated with me.
